When Someone Dies

and it happens to be you,

the universe continues to expand,

trillions of insects reproduce,

nearly 400,000 human babies are born on the earth,

mice squeeze into places they have no business squeezing into,

kids across the globe fasten Pokémon key chains to their backpacks,

and here,

just south of the equator,

the thrush, violetear, and rufous-collared sparrow

screech and hum and warble,

rain awakens the coffee plants,

the pampas grass bends in the breeze along the river,

dogs bark in alleys and car alarms go off

all across the city,

just like they did yesterday,

and will again tomorrow,

and the day after that.
